Arborvitaes

We offer 5 types of Arborvitae. 10 years ago, we planted over 700 in our property and continue to maintain this privacy hedge surrounding the front of our property. You will see this when you visit.

White Cedar (American Arborvitae)

Thuja occidentalis | Zones 2-8 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$20 = 3'-4' in 3 Gal Pot

$30 = 2'-3' in 5 Gal Pot (Landscape Grade) - These are trimmed multiple times per year to be very fully and used for single specimens.

A very forgiving arborvitae species that is tolerate to many soil types, pHs, moisture and sun conditions. Makes for an excellent privacy hedge, but requires yearly shearing to maintain its beauty - shear them leaving the bottom wider than the top to prevent bottom die-off. Deer can harass these trees during a rough winter, but its among their least favorite foods.

Mature Height = 50'-60'

Mature Width = 12'-15'

Hedge Spacing = 1'-4' (commonly used as a hedge shrub - requires yearly shearing)

Emerald Green Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'smaragd' | Zones 3-7 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$55 = 4'-5' in 7 Gal Pot (Landscape Grade)

$25 = 2'-3' in 2 Gal Pot

A simplified form of the White Cedar hedge is the Emerald Green hedge. Plant them 1 foot apart and they will become a dense hedge quickly that requires minimal shearing. They prefer to grow pyramidal, which prevents the bottom die-off of other arborvitaes. They stop growing tall at 15 feet, so no top pruning is required to maintain hedge height.  If you want these are a tight hedge, you need to plant them closer than you would think; keep it to 2'.

Mature Height = 10'-15'

Mature Width = 3'-4'

Hedge Spacing = 1'-2' (commonly used as a hedge shrub)

Green Giant Arborvitae

Thuja plicata 'green giant' | Zones 5-7 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$50 = 3'-4' in 5 Gal Pot (Landscape Grade)

$20 = 1'-2' in 2 Gal Pot

Green Giant is the fastest growing Arborvitae available.  It grows to a height of 50-60’ and a spread of 10-15’ at maturity. Very rapid grower – 3’ per year or more.  Provides nesting sites for a wide range of birds and small animals.   More resistant to deer browsing than other arborvitae, but anything can be deer food under the right circumstances.  These are listed as zone 5, but take care when planting in areas where the ground can get colder than normal for the area; these will do poorly in those areas.

Mature Height = 50'-60'

Mature Width = 10'-15'

Hedge Spacing = 5' (commonly used as a hedge shrub)

Dark Green Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'nigra' | Zones 3-7 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$20 = 1'-2' in 2 Gal Pot

Dark Green Arborvitae can be planted for screening or as a landscape tree.  It has dense needles that retain their dark green color through-out the winter months.  Mature size is around 18-20’ tall and 7-10’ wide.

Mature Height = 18'-20'

Mature Width = 7'-10'

Hedge Spacing = 2-5' (commonly used as a hedge shrub)

Techny Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'techny' | Zones 4-7 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$15 = 1'-2' in 1 Gal Pot

Like the White Cedar and Emerald Green, Techny makes a good choice to create a privacy hedge. Slightly wider than Emerald Green, but darker and slightly less dense. It tops out at 15 feet, which is why its preferred to White Cedar for hedges often.

Mature Height = 12'-15'

Mature Width = 6'-10'

Hedge Spacing = 6'-8' (commonly used as a hedge shrub)

Golden Globe Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Globe' | Zones 3-8 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$15 = 1'-2' in 2 Gal Pot

Dwarf Ball and Gold! - An American Arborvitae that packs vibrant color in the landscape, 'Golden Globe' features dense shoots of visual pleasing yellow foliage on a compact, global form that doesn’t typical need pruning. Handling full direct sun with no foliage burn, it is a fine choice for use in sunny landscape borders, home foundation plantings, or containers. Its formal round shape makes it ideal for use to accentuate entryways.

Mature Height = 3'-4'

Mature Width = 3'-4'

Yellow Ribbon Arborvitae

Thuja occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon' | Zones 2-7 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$15 = 1'-2' in 2 Gal Pot

Pointy and Gold! - A distinctive evergreen with showy, dense golden-yellow foliage that maintains its color throughout the year. Thrives in humid conditions. A superb choice for use as an accent to brighten the landscape year-round. Works well for borders, a privacy screen, or any place where brilliant color is needed.

Mature Height = 8'-10'

Mature Width = 2'-3'

Eastern Red Cedar (Juniper)

Juniperus virginiana | Zones 2-9 | Soil: Widely Adaptable

$15 = 1'-2' in 2 Gal Pot

These cold-hardy, adaptable evergreen trees serve many purposes in the landscape, especially in sites that are dry, alkaline or windy. The foliage of scale-like needles is attractive but prickly. In late summer and fall, many junipers have blue-green berry-like fruits, actually modified cones, that attract birds. Because they are quite salt-tolerant, they can be used near roads, driveways, and sidewalks.

Mature Height = 40'-50'

Mature Width = 10'-20'
